Speach Recognition to Accellerate Blog Posting

I’ve been meaning to catch up on my travel web site for many many months.  And so behind, it is ridiculous.  Meanwhile, have lost a small following of readers I used to have when I did right on the web site occasionally.

Have since found a great new way of keeping up on my travel web site.

I have finally got speech recognition software to work reliably and efficiently.  The trick, is to use a headset that works well with speech recognition software.  I’m using an inexpensive Logitech model which plugs directly into the laptop soundcard.  There are much more expensive versions that plug into your USB.  I am told they have excellent sound quality, but I doubt there any better than the cheap model.  Anyhow, the $20 pair works extremely well for voice recognition.

Since using this new setup, I have found that have been able to post to several blocks easily every day.  Although I can type very quickly, and have scorned voice recognition software for years, I do find it much easier to talk and type.  For this kind of content, I find it easier for my brain to compose by voice than by keyboard.  I’m sold!

I suspect it has been my lack of new content that is responsible for the plummeting of my page Rank on both this site, and my travel web site.  Since I enjoy going to my old travel journals, I plan to post to my travel web site.  In a few months, I will see how this affects my page eight.  Meanwhile, I am seeing a few more visitors to my travel web site, and they click a few ads.  Just a trickle of visitors, but if every click is worth what I’ve seen so far, and the number of visitors go up, then it will all be worthwhile.

Google PR Shakedown

Google has updated page rank again recently.  The good news: my allergy site has gone from PR 4 to PR5!  The bad news: this site and a few others I have dropped from PR 4 to PR2.  Bummer.

I’m not sad though.  Hate to say it but this site doesn’t make a whole lot of money.  The allergy site does.   The change in PR seems to have corresponded to a massive increase in traffic on that site, which I am super-happy about.

Particularly active lately have been articles about gluten.  For some reason, lots of people want to know about it lately, and I am happy to provide visitors with information on the subject, in fact I am encouraged to add more material to the allergy site about gluten.

Allergy Website Gets Page Rang Boost

The allergy website I have been running for the past few months has just got a boost in page rank from 3 to 4!

I am very pleased about this because I can now help more people with allergies find the information they need about how to manage allergies when they google various search terms related to allergies. The site is currently strongest when it comes to wheat allergies, gluten allergies and wheat intolerances, but is starting to grow into other areas as well, including dust allergy and yeast allergy information.

I started the site with a fair bit of depth about eating gluten-free, then started broadening into other food allergies, and lately I’ve started to cover air-borne allergies as well. I have plans to go into more depth on the subjects already covered, as well as broadening into other types of allergies.

Allergy treatments are a popular subject, however the website does not yet cover this kind of information. It is more about how to recognize allergy symptoms, and how to avoid allergens.

If you have any kind of allergy, check out this allergy information website! It is also a place to share information, so do feel free to leave comments.

I am grateful to Steph and Scotty for their help and advice in how to set up a successful website.

New Site About Allergies Launched

Allergen

Here is a new site about allergies. Right now, it is mostly about food allergies, especially to wheat and milk. It will eventually expand to include mould allergies, dust allergies, and other air-born allergens.

I have been dealing with my allergies for close to 20 years, so by now I know quite a bit about keeping allergens out of my life and staying healthy. This project is my chance to share my knowledge with others, and help them deal with their allergies.

The site is young - hopefully there is enough content to be helpful. There will soon be a lot more to help people with allergies, because I know a lot about it from personal experience!

Upcoming Trip to Mexico

I am planning a trip to Mexico again this winter.  I will "design" an even more interesting trip than before.

Right now there is not much to say about it.  I will land in Cancun, then leave the same day, and arrive, by bus, at a more interesting location, TBA.  I will study Spanish, but maybe just for a week.  I will visit small, out-of-the-way places.  You will be able to read about it and see some photos, starting December 2006 at Dougs-Travels.com

One of the things I have to do is choose a guide book, and a map.  I will review my findings at Dougs-Book-Review.com

Feel free to leave comments if you have any good travel suggestions for the Yucatán Peninsula!

Current Projects

I have a lot on the go!

  • Already started: Dougs Travels. This is a chronicle of the exciting and fascinating trips I have been on. Right now, there is just a little bit of material, from emails I sent to friends on previous trips. This will be edited and expanded over time. And new material will be added from the road on future trips of course!
  • Already started: doug's book review. I read quite a bit, and I love books, so I may as well share what I've read, you might get some good ideas. Of course you can leave your comments about the books I've read - you can agree or not .
  • Coming soon: a site about food and air-borne allergies. I've been living with allergies for many years. It was hard at first, but I've learned a lot along the way, and I would like to share as much of that as possible with those who need to know. This includes people with allergies, people who might think they have allergies, people who know people with allergies, restaurant owners who care about their allergy-suffering patrons, to name a few.
  • Other bigger projects that I am not yet ready to disclose publicly! They will be big, they will be wonderful, you will hear about them here first so stay tuned!
